'For, lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth.'

For, lo, the winter is past (Sold out), etching, image:41cm x 34cm, Edition of 39

The allegorical imagery employed in the Song of Solomon has long proved a rich source of inspiration for visual artists. The wealth of detail makes focusing on one small fragment a difficult task. Reading and re-reading the text, I found myself repeatedly drawn to the description of spring, that seems to me to exactly evoke the spirit of the season.

The Flowers I have depicted are among those which would have been found growing in biblical lands in springtime - The Crown Imperial, Iris, Tulip, Narcissus and Lily.
